The Encouragement of Athletics
in General
Chairman's Commentary
Club members and friends,
Hi! To you all,
I’ve noticed that the 2004 athletics year has been quietly gathering momentum and in a stroke, is upon us in full intensity! We have the Marathons and Ultra Marathons on the road, the Time Trial Leagues under full way, the Cross Country season has commenced and Track and Field sees the National Champs being used as Olympic Qualifiers. Let’s not forget that June 16 is not so terribly far away, either. To those of you new to the sport it is a little daunting but to the experienced old hand, the key is to focus on one thing at a time but keep your eye on the big picture. I trust that all of you, no matter what your goals, are on target with your training and most importantly keeping healthy (no colds or flu).
I would like to encourage you and see more and more of you at the Time Trial League and Cross Country League races. PDAC must be a force to be reckoned with, which comes from full participation from the membership. Let’s keep the flag flying!
Congratulations to all who participated in that flat 56/21 kms run in Cape Town, and that you achieved your personal targets. What a wonderful representation from our club. It must have seemed like a club night, only in Cape Town.
Since the last newsletter our Awards evening has taken place very successfully at the Pine Dene Inn Hotel. Once again congratulations to those members who were recognised for their achievements in 2003. Let’s not forget those that work tirelessly to make these functions a success. We thank them and appreciate their invaluable efforts.
Urgently important: we still do not have a sponsor for our
10/21 Kms Race in August. Please consult your contacts and chase any leads that
will bring in sponsorship no matter how big or small.
Your committee is particularly busy at this time with various initiatives and projects. Please give them your support. Of particular note is that we are to consult the membership on the question of the awards evening and its format for the future. Similarly we are to conduct a survey amongst membership to feel the general levels of satisfaction within the club. We are embracing the IT world so as not to be left behind. In this regard special thanks to Gordon who has compiled a Club Database. We are currently looking at feasibility to establish a PDAC Website, with all the bells and whistles.
Cheers for now
Vince

Lucky draw – as this had not been won for the past 2 months it had accumulated to R300.00 (this being the 3rd month the money had to be won) and our lucky winner was Carol Ambrose – remember you have to be present to win the money. Our sponsors were Lise & Steven Muchna of Plumbcare and Phil Tolond of Old Mutual and an anonymous donation.
Club member of the month – Norman Morrick was our club member for February for all the hard work done at the Clubhouse and clearing the sand pit for the long jump ladies ( Harold was specially pleased about that). March our club member was Richard Mncwabe for his outstanding performance on the road, always being placed in the top 5 and then winning the Umgeni Water 15km.
Remember to vote for YOUR club member of the month!!!
A hearty welcome to all our new members and wish you all the best for 2004:-
Ivan Evans, Simon Mthiyane, Isaac Lembede, David Hlabe, Albe Peters, David Khambule, Themba Ntshingila, Philip Hlope, Leonard Ndlovu
Welcome back to Scott Wilson and Charlene Ashe (nee` Miles)
Anyone wanting tracksuits, shorts or tops please let me know asap, as I am in the process of placing an order with PS sports, remember we have to order a minimum of 10 items with our logo, so if you miss out now you will have to wait until we get an order for 10 items.
All for now…

AROUND THE MEN'S BEND
Greetings
again already! Easter has come and gone. The Two Oceans is a thing of the past
and the Big C is looming already.
Congratulations
to all of you who took part in the Two Oceans Ultra and 21km. We had 28 runners
starting the 56km and 7 runners the 21km. There were some pretty good times as
well. A special mention to Lindani Zulu who ran silver on the Ultra and to
Steve “Smooth" Muchna who got silver on the 21km. (Will sulky Roy
Watson please pay his bet now).
Well done
as well to Wayne "The Legend" Scott who ran his 10th Two
Oceans! Can't wait to see your photo at the end Wayne!
I
hope those of you who are doing Comrades are fully into your training by
now. If not be afraid, be very afraid. To those of you who have decided not to
do Comrades - shame - you going to miss it although my good friend
George won't necessarily agree with me.
If you
guys need any help or have any queries, give me a shout and I'll get
someone who knows what they are talking about to help you. Or if you desperate
you can talk to me. Enjoy the long training runs.
Don't
forget the next Time Trial league at Stella on 29th April. Stella have invited
us to stay and braai afterwards. There will be music and dancing girls as well
(just joking before some guys are not allowed to come). Let’s show them how we
can party.
Finally I
again request that you guys get stuck in and help with things happening at our
club. Don't leave it just to the committee members. A good example is where we
now have to get a roster going for people to light the fire on braai nights. I
mean really...!!!!!
Yours in
running
Kelvin
A warm hallo to all the P.D.A.C. ladies out
there, especially the new kids on the block!
I hope you have all had an injury-free and healthy year up till now, and
if not: hang in there - you’ll get
through it! Well done to all the Two Oceans 56km and 21km finishers!
We have already completed two events in this
league with the third league looming on the 06.05.2004 at Hillcrest. Currently we are third on the log behind
Westville and Hillcrest respectively.
With a little bit of effort and lots of commitment we can easily be
second …. Come on, girls … your club NEEDS you!

PLEASE feel free to contact me if you
need any info regarding the time trials.
For those of you training for the Big C: you should be well on your way regarding
training by now and if you need information regarding training runs, please
give me a call and I might be able to join you up with a group. Please try not to run long runs by yourself -
there’s safety in numbers.
·
01.05.2004 -
INDIAN OCEAN MARATHON:
A scenic marathon starting at Glenwood Old
Boys, Durban and finishing at Townsend Park in Ballito! This is usually a well organized run with not
too many hills. Note: This is the last official qualifier for
Comrades 2004 and Comrades will take entries at the finish.
·
02.05.2004 -
PAVILLION 15:
This is a toughie starting and finishing at
the Pavillion. It takes you on a loop
through Westville with the last hill being the dreaded Spine Road. Definitely not a race for the faint hearted
and not the race to do your PB on …A hilly but “different” course.
·
For
the fast and furious:
09.05.2004
- WINGS HALF MARATHON
30.05.2004
- SAVAGES HALF MARATHON
Flat and fast …Nice races for personal bests!
I would like to extend an invitation to all
the ladies wanting to join us for our annual ladies’ training weekend. We will be going to the Underberg-area for
some “altitude” (or is it “attitude”)-training.
If you feel like a cold break filled with lots of fun, lots of laughter,
good company and with a little training in between, please let me know. We will try to keep it as affordable as
possible (depending on sponsorship) and I will require a non-refundable deposit
of R50 upon confirmation. There is only
limited space left, so BOOK NOW!

Walkers
Hi everyone,
It is good to see Janice back training as hard as ever, after her injury to her ankle – the rest seems to have done her the world of good.
Congratulations to Michelle for earning her permanent number at the Postnet Marathon – this is quite an achievement as I believe not many walkers have walked 5 Postnet Marathons – Well done!!!
Charmaine Rowe of Bluff AC has organised a Walking Clinic for the 15th May at kings Park from 6.00am –8.00am – I believe it is really great, there were about 40 walkers at the one held in April – do try and make it.
For those members who have been at races lately you will have noticed we have a male walker who has joined the ladies – welcome Gordon and really hope you enjoy your walking.
Well done to those of you have been doing so well at our races and now that you are all back and fit, hope to see more yellow/black shirts amongst the walkers at races and ladies time trials. Keep up the training.
That’s it for now
Remember those shoes were made for Walking………..

Ladies
Pinetown
ladies were well represented at the recent parlauf held at Westville Athletic
Club. Not only were we well represented but we took second and third
positions!! Thanks to all for running. We have started off well so let’s keep it up.
The
first league race was run from Shongweni Gun Club. Unlike last year when it was a cool day with
drizzle, this year was stinking hot. The
route was different & proved to be very uneven underfoot, pretty hilly, not
too mention long at 4.4kms!!!! I think a
sense of achievement was felt by all who finished!! We had 3 ladies running in the 4km open race
& 6 of us running in the veterans’ race.
The veterans’ race was closely fought between Westville & us but we
won’t know the result until the next event.
Thanks to all for running so well and getting us off to a good
start.

Men
Greetings
Fellow Bush Runners!
The first cross country league meeting was
held at the Shongweni Gun Club, Summerveld on 3 April 2004.The course was
without doubt what you would expect a cross country course to look like. But
for those who ventured out on that very hot, steamy Saturday afternoon,
they were confronted by a very tough course which really tested endurance
and strength. Needless to say having run this course it can only be of benefit
to our road running in the long term.
The following are some of the results from
this event:
OPEN
MEN (4kms):
Steve
Muchna - 21 mins.
MEN 35
& OVER (8kms):
Kelvin
Borland - 42 mins.
MEN 40
& OVER (8kms):
Brian
Norcott - 38 mins.
Neal Neat
- 38 mins.
Vince
Huxtable - 43 mins.
Phil
Tolond - 46 mins.
The next league race is to be held on 15 May
2004. The venue has still to be determined and I will let you have the details
as soon as I receive them.
It really is a fantastic afternoon and once
again I would like to urge all our runners to support the club at the cross
country meetings. You will enjoy it more than you realise!
Cheers.

Watching the Olympic motto unfold over the two days of the Athletics
South Africa Annual Championships, which also doubled as the SA Olympic Trials
was, for me and many others one of the highlights of the year. Witnessing the
cream of South Africa’s athletes competing for gold, silver and bronze medals
plus handsome cash bonuses in forty finals was spectacular. Seeing the joy of
those who achieved the Olympic Qualifying Standards and the look of despair and
frustration of losing out, in some instances, by mere tenths of a second, was
heart wrenching stuff! I personally, wiped many a tear away, overcome by
emotion. The singing of “The Power of a Dream” by Celine Dion at Atlanta and
“Dare to Dream” by Olivia Newton-John and John Howard at the Sydney Games left
lumps in my throat and leaves me wondering what inspirational song Athens will
come with.
There is no disgrace in not achieving ones goal, but not
setting a goal is, so says Natalie du Toit in not achieving her goal to become
the first disabled athlete to qualify for the Olympics in Athens. For those not
aware, Natalie had a leg amputated four weeks after her 17th
Birthday which she celebrated by winning 10 gold medals at the Western Province
Swimming Championships. Undeterred she has reset her goal for Beijing in 2008.
Another who has set Beijing as her long term goal with other goals in between
is none other than our own Kim Surmon.
Briefly, two years 9 months ago, Kim joined my squad in July
2001, she turns 22 on the 14th August, this year, has twice won the
Under 23 Women’s Long Jump at the KZNA Athletics Championships, also, in her
first year as a sprinter placed fifth in the Senior Women’s 100m final in this
years KZNA Champs in March. Let’s recognise Kim for what she has achieved and
for the goals she has set. She accepts that there is much hard work to be done
and is totally committed. I personally, as her coach, am very proud of her and
sincerely hope Kim will be a role model and inspiration to our club.
To all our comrades aspirants, after months of dedicated
training don’t spoil your dreams by not tapering properly. I speak from
experience having lost out on two silvers by doing that extra hard run. Talk to
me for advice.

Time Trial/ Club Night
Every Thursday evening we hold a Time Trial,
through rain or shine, to avail some speed work. This is for everybody, no
matter whether you are slow or fast. Make time trial part of your training. In
two options 4 or 8 kms, starting at 17:30 from the Club House! Following
directly after time trial the club gets together, with Braai fires at the end of
each month. Don’t miss out on the social aspects of your sport. Join us for a
cold one.
Club Captains
Your Club Captains are appointed, as part of their many
duties, to support and assist you the membership with any athletic issues you

The
Perception Surveys
A few
words of explanation with regards to the recent surveys which have been
E-mailed to the electronic section of the members and to be included with this
newsletter for the paper issue to the postal and hand delivery section of the
members. The committee is mandated to manage the club but at the same time to
ensure an understanding of the needs of the membership in these fast and
furious changing times. For various reasons many members do not relate their
concerns or worries about club and direction. We therefore, may miss out on
important issues which are left to simmer under the surface, resulting in
membership apathy. We felt that it was important therefore, to test the pulse
of the membership on a yearly basis, in order to measure whether club
perceptions are improving or getting worse.
As
indicated on the survey forms it is essential that you understand the statement
made and answer it as rapidly as possible. If you stop and think and analyse
the statement, we have missed your first perception, which is generally more
accurate for this exercise. Thus you should take no more than 5 mins to
complete.
For
those with E-mail you may return your form via E-mail or hand them in completed
on a Thursday night after time trial. For those who have received the surveys
as paper copies please return them to us on a Thursday night after time trial.
Once again thank you for your co-operation.
Don't
Forget To Tell Us
YOUR
INFORMATION
As we
have informed you all, we now have a club database, which you will appreciate,
is only as accurate as the information stored within it. It is essential
therefore that any changes in your personal particulars (change in address,
phones, E-mail, etc) be supplied to Lyn in order that the database may be
updated. The accuracy of our information was spotlighted again recently with
the E-mailing of the Survey Perception Sheets. A number of E-mail addresses
failed, which requires Lyn to rework those people. We would therefore be
grateful that if you have E-mail and you would like us to communicate with you
in that medium, that you ensure that we can do so. Please help us in this
regard and consider any changes in your circumstances and update us. Thank you
once again for the support and helping to build on the club.
The Final Word
