Chairman's Commentary

Club members and friends,

Hi! To you all,

Two months down the “road” of the year already! Our first newsletter! How is your 2005 training going? For those of you with eyes on the big race in June, I trust that you are into the serious stuff now. Those gaunt looks from mileage should just be appearing! Marathon season is upon us!

Hulletts PDAC 25, done and dusted, but what a fantastic success. Once again the members of PDAC have displayed to the rest of the clubs how to put on a highly successful race. What is our secret, team work! Can anybody argue over the efforts of each and every one of our members who assisted and helped on the day and dovetailed together? Our main sponsor, Hulletts represented by Guy Armstrong was ecstatic with the day and to the exposure of the Hulletts brand, and consequently, providing there are no economic disasters, Hulletts will be behind us for some time. To Gordon and Lyn, the driving force of this race, we the membership cannot thank you enough. Notwithstanding this, I would like to thank each of you who took some role, whether big or small, in the organisation and function of the race. It cannot happen without you, so pat yourselves on the back, for a job very well done. We are of course tremendously grateful to those organisations that provided us with some form of assistance:-

To Hulletts, to Amalgamated Beverages, to Maxprop, to Pendula Teas, to Spar Buildings Section, to CDC, to Pillar Properties, to Tshelf, to the Harley Boys, to the City Police, to Ethekwini Parks and Recreation Department. If I have omitted any organisation here, please accept our grateful thanks for your support.

Do not forget that our annual awards evening is rescheduled for Friday the 2005/04/08 and will happen at the Pine Dene Inn Hotel. We obviously want to see as many of you there as possible. This is the occasion on which we recognise those of you who have achieved in your disciplines through the previous year. More info will be forthcoming.

That’s all for now,

Vince.

From the Secretary's Desk

I would like to say a big thank you to those people who have made me feel welcome and offered their advice and assistance. I really appreciate it!

My first duty was capturing the results of the Huletts 25 km race results.  What a mind-numbing task!!! I'm very relieved we don't arrange those on a monthly basis!!!   As I know NOTHING about athletics, the terminology and club names have all been a huge learning curve for me.  When I first saw VET, I thought that was the occupation but after realising that there can't possibly be so many Veterinary Surgeons running in the race, I clicked that it stood for veteran - duh!.  Then the abbreviation of the clubs was the next challenge - some people just put initials, others put half the name so I had to make a list of clubs as I came across them and then figure out which was which.  Plus, some of the scrawly writing was a nightmare!!!  I think I am now qualified to work in a pharmacy and decipher doctor's writing!!  Anyway, as the next one we arrange is 14 August, I have some time to get up to speed.

Please do not hesitate to email me for any information such as the 2005 fixtures, time trials duty and results, etc. My address is dianne@diannesweb.com and if you are bored, browse my website which is www.diannesweb.com

See you on Thursday!

Dianne

Ladies Corner

Well, here we are again.  A brand new year with brand new challenges!  I hope you all had a restful festive season and by now (mid-Feb) you should have shed all your festive “padding”, dusted off the cobwebs and the training should be in full swing.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Samantha Hibbert as ladies vice-captain.  If you can’t get hold of me please feel free to contact Sam with any queries you might have.

WHAT’S UP?

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our new lady members.  If you thought you just joined PDAC to get your licence number and to be never seen again.... think again.  There are lots of ways you can get involved:

·         Cross Country:  See the XC article in the newsletter or contact June on 0824213037.

·         The Highway Ladies – New Balance/Powerade Time Trial League:    There are 7 leagues throughout the year.  You do not have to be a competitive “racing snake” to do these.  They are fun 4 km events and an ideal opportunity to assess your fitness level (or lack thereof).  The more people we have attending the greater the chances of winning.  Just think about it:  you support your club and you even stand a chance of winning a BRAND NEW pair of running shoes and other lucky dips (and don’t forget the snacks afterwards) ....   Contact Lise (runners) on 031 – 7014038 or Lyn (walkers) on 031 – 7083784 for more info.  Also see the fixture list attached.

REMINDER:  The first league will be hosted by Queensburgh Harriers on Wednesday, 23.02.2004.  SEE YOU ALL THERE!!!

·         The Durban Runner/Saucony Time Trial League (Coastal):

Traditionally this is seen as the men’s league but ladies from Durban clubs also support this league.  If we can enter a team(s) comprising 4 ladies each we stand a good chance of doing really well in this league.  Come on girls.... what do you think?  Fixture list attached.

·         PDAC Ladies Weekend:

This is planned for sometime in the middle of the year.  Join us for a weekend of good old-fashioned training and fun.  More details to follow.

·         Training:

Although we have no formal training groups per se, there are informal groups of varying ability/distance running all the time.  If you would like to join one of these groups, please give me a call.  We also have a couple of ladies doing speed work on the field at the club on a Tuesday evening (16:30 onwards).  If you need some advice I will gladly assist and if I can not help you one of the more experienced runners / coaches in the club might be able to help.

RESULTS

Please, please, please forward your race results to Sam on samh@absamail.co.za or give her a call on 031 – 7021383.  All we need is the date, the name of the race and your time.  We really battle to get results from clubs and part of our “job” is to track your results.  You just make our job much easier.  (PS:  A special thank you to Lyn Scott for collecting all the results at all the races she attends.  What would we do without you?)

FEEDBACK

·         15.02.2005 - The Durban Runner/Saucony Time Trial League:

Four of our girls represented PDAC on Tuesday night at Savages and finished second (awaiting confirmation) on the night behind Savages.  Amanda, who was wanting to better her PB of 20:43 for the course (4.5km), comfortably broke 20 min followed by Sheree, Teresa and June (race report thanks to June Watson Associated Press ...).

QUOTABLE QUOTES:

·         “A vision is where you are going – a plan is how to get there.”

·         “Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.”

Walkers

Our first newsletter of the year!

Firstly I must thank all who helped on our Huletts/PDAC 25km – it was a great success and we have had numerous compliments from other clubs – especially about the ICE COLD water at the end - thank you.

A few walkers have been busy pounding the tarmac already – and they have had lovely weather to do this – Sunday mornings have been lovely, just enough cloud cover to keep the sun away long enough for us to finish the race.

Don’t forget our ladies interclub time trials – the first league will probably have been run by the time you read this - remember the second leg of the league is at Chiltern – Thurs 7th April

Captain’s Report

Cross Country Ladies

 Hello ladies,

Cross Country is once again upon us & I do hope that we will all be participating, as it all depends on teamwork.

There will be a parlauf to begin with and then 7 league races.   Things have changed this year, and there is a whole new cross country infrastructure.  At this stage I don't know if there will be much change to the usual format of races but I shouldn't think so. There is usually an option of 2 ladies races one is 4km and the other is 6 km.  Veteran ladies usually run 4kms.  However, this info is really just to inform you of the dates for you to diarise, and I will keep you posted with further information as it becomes available.

Parlauf explained.

The first cross country is a parlauf which to any newcomers is a two man relay over a 1km XC course where each partner runs 3 times.  This will take place at Westville running club on Friday evening 11th March.  It is quite hard but also very good fun!

This was last years timetable for parlauf, which once again i assume we will follow, but if you do intend running just phone me to confirm times.

18.00                2 x 1Km                       Mob race

18.15                3 x 1Km                       Junior Boys

18.45                3 x 1Km                       Junior Girls & Mixed Juniors

19.15                3 x 1Km                       Ladies

19.45                4 x 1Km                       Seniors & Mixed teams

If you do not have a partner for this event please let me know and I will pair you off with someone.

Please spread the word about cross country to any of the new girls.

Thanks, in anticipation of a good response.

June

Track & Field

Citius, Altius, Fortius (faster, higher, stronger)

Sometimes I feel that maybe I take my role as coach too seriously.  I've been told as much.  Then I look back at some time spent with Frank Horwill, renowned British middle distance coach who was conducting coaching clinics in Cape Town in the early nineties, '91, '92 and other successful international coaches and I realise that my behaviour is no different to theirs.

Their philosophy of leaving no stone unturned in their quest to assist athletes to reach their goal is the same.  Coaching excellence requires constant research and its application. Successful coaching is both an art and a science.  I love athletics - it is one of my passions. What good in having passion for something and not showing it?

At this time, when most of you are building up to Two Oceans and / or Comrades, it is essential to blend training methods.  Adding speed to distance training will work for any runner of any ability.

Whether you do sprints, repeats on the track or tempo runs (20 to 30 minutes of running at faster-than-usual pace), you will soon develop a quicker stride.  Last newsletter I mentioned Lasse Viren, the great Finnish runner's mental strength.  Don't accept limits.  Emil Zatopek of Czechoslovakia who won the 5000, 10000 and the marathon at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki replied when questioned about his training methods: “Why should I practice running slow?  I already know how to run slow.  I want to learn to run fast."  Compared to many contemporary runners, Zatopek had limited ability, but maximised his talent through hard work and determination.  He was known to have run 24 km a day, much of it hard and fast and sometimes wore heavy boots to make him tougher.  His training methods were legendary including sessions of 60 x 400 metres.

When I first set out to run long distance, I was convinced that to race fast, you had to train fast.  Before becoming aware of so-called structured training programmes, I had three favourite workouts

#1.  I fished out an old pair of leather cross country spikes and would go to the local soccer field which was about 2kms from home, then warm up, then sprinting up and down the touchlines and jog the goal line, then recovery.
#2. With ordinary tennis takkies, out on the road, do intermittent surges of random distances, which I was to learn was called fartlek.  An example: on hearing or seeing a car approaching, I would run hard until it overtook me.

#3.  Distance runs, depending on how I felt, building up to 30 to 40 kms every second week!

On this, I ran my first Comrades at the age of 40 years in 08:05, an up run at that.  The following year, on the same regime, I ran my first silver in -7:05.  Yeh! Yeh! no big deal I hear you say.  All I'm saying is that while structured training schedules have their place in regard to the discipline required in progressive training, they can also be counter productive, particularly to novices.  To follow rigidly can be intimidating.  My advice is to use the programme as a guideline and run as you feel, provided you are honest with yourself that it is not laziness preventing you from that run.

When things go wrong - and they are bound to - keep your eye on the ball so to speak.  Remember the ultimate goal you have set for yourself and keep focussed on that.  Visualization of achieving that goal, be it to finish your first 42km marathon or crossing the finish line in your first Comrades or qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  VISUALISE

On the track scene, with the KZN and SA champs looming up ahead, there have been good and bad results.  Jean Foster, after her holiday was looking forward to participating in the Sasolburg Masters Championships, was stricken with bronchitis and was unable to compete.  Jean made the trip regardless in support of the KZN team. Young Kim, our sprinter, after experiencing some disruptions over the holidays, bounced back strongly to finish second in the 100 metre sprint despite having to run into a gusting head wind registering -3 to -4 metres/second.

Until next time, yours in athletics,

Harold

Time Trial/ Club Night

Every Thursday evening we hold a Time Trial, through rain or shine, to avail some speed work. This is for everybody, no matter whether you are slow or fast. Make time trial part of your training. In two options 4 or 8 kms, starting at 17:30 from the Club House! Following directly after time trial the club gets together, with Braai fires at the end of each month. Don’t miss out on the social aspects of your sport. Join us for a cold one.

Don't Forget To Tell Us

As we have informed you all, we now have a club database, which you will appreciate, is only as accurate as the information stored within it. It is essential therefore that any changes in your personal particulars (change in address, phones, E-mail, etc) be supplied to Dianne or myself Vince, in order that the database may be updated. A number of E-mail addresses still fail, which requires us to rework those people. We would therefore be grateful that if you have E-mail and you would like us to communicate with you in that medium that you ensure that we have correct info. Please help us in this regard and consider any changes in your circumstances and update us. Thank you once again for the support and helping to build on the club.
