|
CHAIRMAN’S CHIRPClub members and friends, Greetings to you all, |
||
|
Into the second month of the year already, and our first newsletter! How is your 2006 treating you and how is your training going? For those of you with eyes on the big races at Easter and in June, I trust that you are into the serious stuff now. Those gaunt looks from mileage should just be appearing! Marathon season is virtually upon us!
Huletts PDAC 25, done and dusted, but what a fantastic success once again. To achieve a Race 98 % assessment in Runners World is awesome. The members of PDAC have displayed to the rest of the clubs how to put on a highly successful race (remember A-B races are the most logistically challenging). What is our secret, team work and resilience! Can anybody argue over the efforts of each and every one of our members who assisted and helped on the day and dovetailed together? Our main sponsor, Huletts represented by Nirvana Singh was ecstatic with the day and to the exposure of the Huletts brand, and consequently, providing there are no economic disasters, Huletts will be behind us for some time. To Gordon and Dianne, the driving force of this race, we the membership cannot thank you enough. Notwithstanding this, I would like to thank each of you who took some role, whether big or small, in the organisation and function of the race. It cannot happen without you, so pat yourselves on the back, for a job very well done.
|
We are of course tremendously grateful to those organisations that provided us with some form of assistance:-
To Huletts, to ABI, to Maxprop, to Mondipak, to Spar Build-It, to Pillar Properties, to Tshelf, to Linnows Lounge, to Gijimas AC, to Hillcrest AC, to the Highway Hash, to Lyndhurst Primary School, to 4 Way Spar, to the Harley Boys, to the City Police and to the Ethekwini Parks and Recreation Department. If I have omitted any organisation here, please accept our grateful thanks for your support.
Our renovations are well in hand and we crave your patience until completion. We feel that the changes are to the benefit of the membership and welcome any suggestions and improvements.
Do not forget our annual awards evening taking place at the Pine Dene Inn Hotel. We obviously want to see as many of you there as possible. This is the occasion on which we recognise those of our members who have achieved in their chosen disciplines through the previous year. More info, date etc will be forthcoming.
That’s all for now, Vince |
|
CROSS COUNTRY LADIESHello ladies, Cross Country is almost upon us & I do hope that we will all be participating, as it does all depend on teamwork.
|
There is a fixture list to be found on the PDAC website. I think that it will be subject to change, as the clubs hosting the events were not consulted as to the availability of the venues etc, so I foresee some problems, so I wouldn’t diarise these dates just yet. However, it does sound like the parlauf is pretty well set for Friday evening 10th March? Braai fires are available afterwards.
Parlauf explained.
The first cross country event is known as a parlauf which to any newcomers is a two person relay held over a 1km XC course where each partner runs 3 times. This will take place at Westville running club, Maryvale Road on Friday evening 10th March. It is very hard but also very good fun!
You obviously require a partner for this event, so please let me know if you want to find your own partner or if I should pair you off with someone. Could you also please spread the word about cross-country to any of the new girls.
If you require any further info please contact me. Thanks, in anticipation of a good response!!!!! All for now June |
|
|
Our ladies had a very good year in 2005 winning a gold and a bronze at Natal Champs & then 5 of us being selected to run at SA Champs where Stephanie came away with the bronze medal in her category.
There will be a parlauf to begin with and then 7 league races. I think things are just going to follow the same format as last year. At this stage I shouldn’t think that there would be much change to the usual format of races. There is usually an option of 2 senior/open ladies races one is over 4kms and the other is over 6 kms. Veteran & sub Veteran ladies will run 4kms. |

LADIES CORNERMay 2006 be a wonderful running / walking year to you all and I wish you only “fleet and free”-running. A warm P.D.A.C. welcome to all the new ladies that joined. If you are a “newbie” I want to urge you to come to the club on a Thursday afternoon (17:00 onwards) to come and meet the wonderful crowd you have just joined. All you have to do is to go up to the secretary and she will point you in the right direction. If you need any advice, encouragement or question answered, please do not hesitate to contact either me or Sam.
LADIES LEAGUE TIME TRIALS
The ladies time trial league is a friendly competition run /walked by the ladies of the Highway area. It is a good training session and a good gauge of your fitness (or lack thereof). It is open to runners and walkers and social members can also run / walk.
Scoring explained: A running team consists of 6 ladies and a walking team of 4. The times of the first 6 ladies of a particular club is added and obviously the club with the fastest time scores the highest points (ie. 20 for first, 19 for second etc.). The next 6 ladies’ score is then added and they might have the 7th highest score, which means they will score 14 points. IN OTHER WORDS: The more ladies, the more teams, the MORE points! |
You might think that we do not need you BUT ..... we get penalized for each and every lady member who does not participate (this applies to the “handicap” league). You see? We DO need you.
If you have any questions please drop us a line.
QUOTABLE QUOTES: “Every day I try to touch the sun before it sets. Every day I run, I get closer.” Only those who risk going to far can possibly know how far they can really go.

Interclub Time Trial Pietermaritzburg v Durban. 31st January 2006
Each year the Highway Interclub time trial kicks off with a race between Pietermaritzburg girls and the Durban girls and is held alternately at each center. The first 10 from each centre to count. The race is normally won by the host centre. However, this year we upset the applecart by winning over a 5 km course at Collegians Club, Pietermaritzburg. Furthermore, we had 6 PDAC ladies in the top 10 & also won the prize for top club team home. It was a very good start to the year and lets hope that’s the way it will continue!
Our team was Danielle, Sam, Lynda, Sheree, Teresa & myself (June). |

TRACK and FIELDCitius, Altius, Fortius.
Our first newsletter of 2006. Hello everyone! I wish everyone a healthy, injury-free successful new year.
If you haven’t already done so, its time to revisit previously set goals. I recall an insert from Kelly Holmes in a previous newsletter on setting goals. “Set yourself goals, both short and long term. Make them work for you. Put them on paper and hang them up where you can see them. Look at them every day. Goals increase motivation and self-confidence.
Short term goals must be SMART, i.e. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and have a Time band.
Achieved goals add up and as the list gets longer, so does your self-confidence”. |
Be positive about everything in life and look at setbacks as a springboard; every day there is a lesson to be learned.
The first two track meetings of a busy year ahead have taken place, with a third cancelled due to the A1 Grand Prix.
At the first meeting of the year, Kim Surmon and Anne Bloem, a newcomer to serious sprinting, competed in the 100 and 200 metres with Anne achieving a creditable 4th place in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m. Kim appeared to have an off day, running out of the medals in the 100m and 4th in the 200m.
At the second meeting on Saturday 21 January, Kim made up for a disappointing meeting the previous week by running her best race ever with a PB in the 100m, while Anne was busy seconding her man friend in the Dusi. |
Their next meeting will be on Saturday 4th February. Disappointingly, neither have qualified for the S A Champs on the 11th and 12th February.
Having watched their recent improvement, there is little to be downhearted about as there is much to come from these two talented sprinters. Keep working hard as you are and the results will come.
Until next time. Harold.

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESKSo the PDAC Huletts 25km race is now behind us. I had the waitresses at my local restaurant filling bank bags with entry forms and safety pins for me and then had another waitress come and help me capture the results which was why I was able to issue the results within two days. My thanks to the staff at Ikhaya Grill!
I found some judges comments on the Runners World website which I thought was interesting reading so have made a summary. Dave Coetzee and Sharon Fuchs are welcome in our pub anytime! J |
I dumped the “take a breather” page as no-one seemed to read it and it was also pointed out to me that it wasn’t running related.
I am however trying another competition. Its not running related but we all eat!!!
On offer are four Sunday lunch vouchers. Ikhaya Grill cook a Sunday roast with beef and pork, two vegetables, potatoes, rice and gravy for an amazing R24.95. It’s not worth cooking yourself and having to do all the dishes at that price!!!
|
Again, you have two ways of entering: either email secretary@pdac.co.za with “Lucky Draw for Ikhaya Grill” in the subject line or put your name and contact details on a piece of paper and give it to me on Thursday nights. The lucky draw will take place at the February Braai Night on 23 February 2006.
Until the next edition …

Well done PDAC, fantastic race except for the last table running out of water there no complaints from me just praise. It was great to have the Runners World pace setters there, hopefully a regular feature in future. |
My fav on the calendar. 1 table - water in bottles a bit sad. Walkers better prize money than last year! Keep going - GETTING THERE. Hand-outs GREAT! Stays my fav! Well done PDAC!! |
Was RW 3H00 Pacesetter- Marker boards not clearly visible in the first few Kms,otherwise a good race. |
Need more tables and pens for filling in entries |

No coke or water at some tables, uninformed marshalls, not the most organised race, but, maybe the attendance was more than they had anticipated ??? |
